einen ersten Musikunterricht erhielt er vom Vater, einem Stadtmusikanten. Später wurde er durch Cosel und Marxsen in Klavier, Komposition und Theorie unterrichtet. 1653 wurde Brahms auf einer Konzertreise von Joseph Joachim entdeckt und an Robert und Clara Schumann empfohlen. Robert Schumann stellte Brahms der Fachwelt in der NZfM vom 28.10.1853 mit der Überschrift 'Neue Bahnen' vor. Nach Dirigententätigkeiten in Detmold und Hamburg zog Brahms 1862 nach Wien, wo er von 1863 bis 1864 die Singakademie und von 1872 bis 1875 die Konzerte der Musikgesellschaft leitete. Abgesehen von Erholungsreisen in Österreich oder nach Italien verließ Brahms die Stadt nicht mehr. Seine Kompositionen umfassen Orchester-, Gesangs-, Kammer-, Klavier- und Orgelmusikwerke, Chorgesänge, Duette und Klavierlieder.
